Mr. Armstrong founded and operated Armstrong Gemmology for 5 years as a sole proprietorship. In 2017 he founded the Lonestar Gem Lab.
Mr. Armstrong has had a life long interest in gems, rocks and minerals. As a boy he aspired to become a geologist and a mineralogist. He taught himself how to cut gems at the age of 14. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force right out of high school and served for 11 years as an enlisted airmen achieving the grade of Technical Sergeant in the air operations career field. The Air Force sent him to the Florida State University to finish his under graduate degree. He majored in management with a minor in geology. While at FSU he took 3 mineralogy courses as part of his work for the geology minor. He was the only non-geology major in those courses and earned an A average in those courses. He was commissioned to Second Lieutenant in 1972 and served as an air traffic control officer and as an administrative officer. His overseas service included Vietnam, Guam and Thailand. While in Thailand he worked evenings managing the base lapidary shop where he also instructed patrons on how to cut gems.
Mr. Armstrong began his gemology education in the late 1960s with the Gemological Institute of America. He eventually earned the Graduate Gemologist, Graduate Pearls and Accredited Jewelry Professional titles from the GIA.
Mr. Armstrong also earned MBA and Masters of Accountancy degrees and was a Certified Public Accountant for several years. He held teaching positions for several years at various colleges teaching various business courses. He also had a 16 year career as an Auditor with the U.S Army Audit Agency. A highlight of his audit career was serving on the Department of Defense Presidential Inauguration Committe as an auditor in 1988. He is retired from the Air Force Reserve and Federal Civil Service.
